photographer and night editor at the Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield died on Thursday at home A longtime journalist and pho tographer he started working at the newspaper several years ago He left to pursue other opportuni ties and returned in 1979 as a re porter He went on to hold various posi tions and was most recently a night editor He was known since 1952 for his work on the Saturday photograph page rom 1963 to 1972 he worked in the news office at Williams Col lege in Williamstown and became news director He was known also for his pub lic stance against development of the Mount Greylock State Reser vation He was elected president of the Mount Greylock Protective Society in 1964 and fought suc cessfully to halt a proposal for a tramway to run from Adams to the summit of Greylock With the late Robert Kimball he started a weekly summer sup plement Berkshire Week in 1954 which was later absorbed into the former UpCountry magazine He had also worked briefly in a photography studio in San Antonio Texas Born in Carbondale Ill he moved with his family to Amherst several years ago and attended schools there He was graduated from Amherst High School in 1944 He spent the next two years in the Navy and served aboard a de stroyer in the Pacific late in World War II In 1950 he received a degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where
