The new season always brings with it the opportunity to refresh different rooms and give spaces a much-needed update. Whether you're someone who is keen with a paintbrush (and isn't afraid of some DIY) or find yourself more inclined to pick up a colourful cushion or new set of bedding, we've picked our favourite products to give your home a refresh. Natural selection

Botanical patterns will invite the outside in: leafy prints can be delicate and restful, or lean towards something vibrant and more playful. Scale is important – the bigger the print, the bolder the look. For a super-quick update, don’t underestimate the power of a new houseplant. A bushy kentia palm, displayed in a rattan basket or stoneware planter, will fill any space beautifully.

Beautiful bobbins

We love the ornamental appeal of this detailing. With roots in traditional English decorating, bobbin-trimmed furniture has been updated in a palette of rainbow hues (from sugary pastels to zingy brights) making the pieces feel bang up to date. They make the perfect way to bring some charm and whimsy to your space.

Red alert

The shade to know this season is tomato red, which works beautifully well in kitchens. For a transformation with real impact, why not change the colour of your cabinetry? Try Emperor’s Silk chalk paint by Annie Sloan for a good match to the shade shown here. Or bring a whole new look to countertop with accessories (quirky or otherwise) and appliances in this trending hue.

Moments in the sun

As the days become brighter and longer, we’re tapping into summer with a casual Mediterranean vibe at home. In the bathroom, why not layer up with lightweight materials such as cotton, linen and wicker? Add some home fragrance for an extra sensory moment – scents of lemon, orange or green basil are fresh and uplifting.

Geometric motifs are an enduring trend, and gingham is the prettiest way to embrace them. Start small by using gingham in home accessories, such as a smart throw (ideal draped over the arm of a chair, but also perfect as we head towards picnic season) or invest in a gorgeous new rug to make more of a statement.

Bearing fruit

Surprisingly timeless and wonderfully collectable, china featuring strawberries, watermelons and every fruit in between will bring a sense of fun to your table. For a grown-up twist on the look, consider beautiful investment pieces from cookery writer Skye McAlpine’s Tavola range and the hand-painted designs from Bordallo Pinheiro.

Simply the zest

With more of us now being braver with colour, citrus shades have grown in popularity. Lemon and lime hues make a refreshing colour combination, giving rooms an upbeat feel. They’re also surprisingly effective in bedrooms, but it’s best to use them on furniture and accessories, rather than walls, so the colours don’t overwhelm the senses.
